Weekend Warriors Be Wary
-Article From Florida Today
There’s nothing like a shot of warm weather to awaken weekend warriors from winter hibernation on the couch. They may be tempted to grab the tennis racket, basketball sneakers or golf clubs and have a go at it. But before attempting that first forehand smash, jump shot or 300-yard drive, be cautious. You could end up back on the couch with an injury, especially if you’ve been sedentary for some time.
“If they’re going from the couch to the tennis court, that’s probably a little bit too aggressive,” said Dr. Steve Badolato of Badolato Family Health and Sports Medicine in Melbourne. “This is something where these participants need to make sure they have some kind of baseline fitness before they actually go out there and start playing a couple of sets of tennis.”
He recommends starting out slowly.
“You want to increase your time and intensity over a period of time,” he said. “For example, if somebody’s coming from the couch to exercise, it’s recommended anywhere from 25 minutes to 35 minutes three or four times a week of gradual exercise. It’s walk-before-you-run-type stuff.”
